Even within the capital city, Ulaanbaatar, you will see portable yurts (also known as gers, circular felt tents used by Mongolian nomads) set up in backyards of neat brick houses, where young newlyweds live until they are ready to find their own house. Venture out further to explore the endless Mongolian Steppe, an immense stretch of grassland that dominates the Inner Mongolian landscape, where large herds of animals graze, including gazelle, sheep, goat and camel. Further south you’ll find the arid scrub of the Gobi Desert, where dinosaur fossils have been found. Mongolia is a country with a fascinating history and culture that is well and truly alive today.
